Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to the Spring term 2024!   I hope that you all had a lovely Christmas holiday and are ready for a great term of learning and fun in Year 1!  Keep reading for key information about Year 1.

Class Teacher: Miss Potts
Class Teaching Assistants: Mrs Penney and Mrs Walker

PE days: Tuesday (outside) and Thursday (inside). On these days, children can come to school in their PE kit.

Reading books are changed on Fridays. Children will have 3 books in their book bags. They have two phonics RWI books, that they are expected to read at least three times a week at home. This is to help them become fluent and help them to be able to answer comprehension questions about what they have read.

The third book is a 'Reading for Pleasure'  book, which will be taken home and is used to share with someone in  the family who will model reading aloud.  The children are not expected to be able to read this book independently, but they will recognise familiar words and will be able to their RWI strategies to read words. After the third or fourth time of reading, the book your child might be able to join in with the repetitive parts.

If you have any questions, my door is always open or you can email using the following address: year1@moricetownacademy.org.

Spring Term 2024

Our Topic this term is Great Creations.

This term, we will be starting our topic Great Creations. In Geography, we will be learning about where we live and we will be comparing two of Brunel's bridges. In History, we will be learning about Isambard Kingdom Brunel's life and his creations.

Our Jigsaw lessons (PSHE) are about 'Dreams and Goals' and 'Healthy Me' so we will be looking at how we learn and we will think about what we have achieved and how we overcame any obstacles. In 'Healthy Me', we will look at how to make healthy lifestyle choices. In Science, we will be learning about animals including humans and we will be learning about the 5 senses and the different animal groups. In Art, we will be looking at and creating artwork inspired by Frida Kahlo and Iris Scott. Keep an eye on the weekly newsletter for our weekly learning roundups.
