Science Overview

Introduction

At Morice Town Primary Academy, we teach Science using a curriculum based on providing the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Following the National Curriculum and EYFS Development Matters, our curriculum is designed to build up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

Intent

To provide a rich curriculum that is broad and balanced, with all lessons clearly planned and taught in a logical progression. The curriculum is designed to enable all pupils to be stimulated and challenged, make accelerated progress and to fulfil potential.

As well as acquiring the intended skills and knowledge in science, there will be opportunities for all pupils to demonstrate and develop their key writing and mathematical skills through the science curriculum.

Implementation

By maintaining the teachers’ good standard of subject knowledge and further developing the use of verbal and written feedback to deepen, challenge and support learning.

By gathering clearer assessment data to check understanding and inform teaching.

With high expectations reflected across the sequenced planning, teaching materials and approaches employed support the intent of the science curriculum.

EYFS

Science at Foundation Stage is covered in the 'Understanding the World' area of the EYFS Curriculum. It is introduced indirectly through activities that encourage every child to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, think, make decisions and talk about the world around them.

Special Educational Needs (SEND) pupils

Lessons are adapted to enable all pupils to access their learning, including pupils with SEND. Knowledge organisers are also adapted to enable SEN pupils to access the key information for each unit.
