Welcome to the Autumn Term 2023!   I hope that you all had a lovely Summer holiday and are ready for a great term of learning and fun in Year 1!  Keep reading for key information about Year 1.

PE days: Tuesday (outside) and Thursday (inside). On these days, children can come to school in their PE kit.
 

Reading books are changed on Fridays. Children will have 3 books in their book bags. They have two phonics RWI books, that they are expected to read at least three times a week at home. This is to help them become fluent and help them to be able to answer comprehension questions about what they have read.

The third book is a 'Reading for Pleasure'  book, which will be taken home and is used to share with someone in  the family who will model reading aloud.  The children are not expected to be able to read this book independently, but they will recognise familiar words and will be able to their RWI strategies to read words. After the third or fourth time of reading, the book your child might be able to join in with the repetitive parts.

Year 1 is a very important year for your child learning to read and write.

Autumn Term 2023
 
Our Topic this term is Toys.
 
This term, we will be starting our topic Toys. In History, we will be learning about old and new toys, ordering these on a timeline and identifying how toys from the past are different to toys from the present. We will be looking at how toys have changed over time. 
 
Our Jigsaw lessons (PSHE) are about 'Being Me in My World' so we will be talking about how we belong to Year 1 and we will be learning about rewards and consequences. In Art, we will be doing lego printing and in Science, we will be looking at different materials, what they are used for and their properties in our topic 'Everyday Materials'.
