French
Intent
At Drake and Morice Town Primary Academies, our goal is to provide pupils with the opportunity to learn a foreign language, fostering cultural awareness, broadening horizons, and building confidence. We aim to deliver a high-quality Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum that is inclusive and engaging for all learners.
Implementation
We use the Language Angels programme to deliver French across Key Stage 2. This award-winning, fully resourced scheme of work includes:
- Progressive Curriculum: Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation taught through themed units that increase in complexity.
- Interactive Lessons: Songs, games, stories, and speaking activities make learning fun and memorable.
- Cultural Awareness: Exploration of traditions, festivals, and customs from around the world.
- Assessment & Support: Built-in assessment tools and differentiated resources ensure progress for all learners, including those with SEND and EAL.
Impact
Through this approach, pupils develop strong language skills, cultural understanding, and confidence in communication. They gain an appreciation of global diversity and are better prepared for future learning opportunities, supporting their personal growth and academic success.
Bastille Day Celebration – July 2025
In July, our pupils enjoyed a vibrant celebration of Bastille Day, France’s national holiday, as part of our commitment to cultural learning through the Language Angels programme.
The day was filled with French-themed activities that brought language and culture to life:
-
🥐 French Food Tasting – Children sampled delicious French treats including croissants, brioche, and fromage, expanding their taste buds and vocabulary!
-
🎲 Traditional Games – Pupils played classic French playground games and learned how children in France celebrate the day.
-
🎶 Singing in French – Our classrooms echoed with joyful renditions of French songs, helping children practise pronunciation in a fun and musical way.
-
🎨 Arts & Crafts – From Eiffel Tower collages to tricolour flags, pupils expressed their creativity while learning about French symbols and traditions.
The event was a wonderful opportunity to deepen pupils’ understanding of French culture and language in a hands-on, memorable way. It also supported our wider curriculum goals of fostering global citizenship and curiosity about the world.
